"Let Her Go" [Lyrics]
Well you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go And you let her go Staring at the bottom of your glass Hoping one day you'll make a dream last But dreams come slow and they go so fast You see her when you close your eyes Maybe one day you'll understand why Everything you touch surely dies But you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go Staring at the ceiling in the dark Same old empty feeling in your heart 'Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast Well you see her when you fall asleep But never to touch and never to keep 'Cause you loved her too much And you dived too deep Well you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go And you let her go And you let her go Well you let her go 'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go 'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go And you let her go

Suppose you were to come upon someone in the woods working feverishly to saw down a tree.
“What are you doing?” you ask.
“Can’t you see?” comes the impatient reply. “I’m sawing down this tree.”
“You look exhausted!” you exclaim. “How long have you been at it?”
“Over five hours,” he returns, “and I’m beat! This is hard work.”
‘Well, why don’t you take a break for a few minutes and sharpen that saw?” you inquire. “I’m sure it would go a lot faster.”
“I don’t have time to sharpen the saw,” the man says emphatically. “I’m too busy sawing!”

How to Learn Pronunciation
English pronunciation can be difficult for international students. However, it is very important to have clear pronunciation.
Perfection is not required but clarity is. After all, it doesn’t matter how great your grammar and vocabulary are if no one can understand you.
So, how can you improve your English pronunciation?
I recommend the following steps:
1. IDENTIFY A VERY SPECIFIC RESULT THAT YOU WANT
To improve, you must have a very clear goal. General goals such as “I want to have better English pronunciation” have no power. You need a much more specific goal.
For example, pick your favorite American actor or actress and decide to speak like them. Your goal might be, “I will speak exactly like George Clooney.” This goal is much more powerful because it is very specific.
2. CHOOSE A DEADLINE
Goals are powerless without a timeline. You must choose a specific date for when you will accomplish your pronunciation goal.
Your goal, therefore, might be: “I will speak exactly like George Clooney by June 4, 2018”.
3. FIND A LOT OF COMPELLING REASONS FOR YOUR GOAL
As Anthony Robbins says, “If you can find enough ‘why’s’, you will easily find the how’s.” In other words, if you are very motivated, you will find a way to succeed. Motivation (psychology) is more important than the method.
It’s not enough to just have a goal, you must make that goal emotionally powerful. You must have very powerful reasons – a long list of reasons. So, you need to brainstorm. Imagine all of the incredible benefits that will come to you as a result of having excellent pronunciation. Find powerful emotional reasons. Also, imagine all of the terrible results of failing.
Your list might include:
I’ll get a fantastic job and make a lot of money because my English is so clear!
I’ll meet beautiful American girls, have lots of dates, and find an amazing girlfriend because my English is so fantastic!
The important thing to do is to find the reasons that are powerful for you. Exaggerate them. Imagine the best possible consequences!
4. TAKE MASSIVE ACTION
Now, you have a very specific English pronunciation goal, you have a deadline, and you have a long list of emotionally-compelling reasons.
Now it’s time for action. It’s time to create a massive action plan.
Here’s what I recommend:
Buy a few movies that have your favorite actor or actress in.
Each day, watch one scene of the movie. Play the scene a few times with subtitles and listen carefully to the actor’s intonation (the rise, fall, and rhythm of his/her speech).
Next, rewind, and play just one sentence. Pause and copy the actor’s speech. Copy it EXACTLY. Copy the rhythm. Copy the volume. Copy the pauses. Copy the emotion.
Also, copy the actor’s gestures. Move your body exactly like they do. Copy their facial expressions exactly. Copy their posture.
Remember: your goal is to look, act, and speak exactly like them.
Follow this system for 20-30 minutes every day.
5. MEASURE & CELEBRATE
After a few months of using this system, it’s time to measure yourself. Play a scene from a movie with your actor in it, then pause it. Copy the actor’s speech AND record yourself speaking the same scene.
Next, rewind your recording and play it. Then rewind the movie scene and play it. Listen to both and decide – how close are you to the actor? What is different about your speech and theirs? What are you doing well?
Use this measurement to adjust your focus then continue using the system every day.
Finally, when your deadline comes and you succeed – be sure to celebrate! Have a party! Go crazy! Fill yourself with happy, excited, grateful emotions. This will increase your motivation and will help you continue to improve as you move toward your next goal.
In my opinion, this is how to learn English pronunciation most effectively, most enjoyably, and most efficiently.

Jack Ma - DO WHAT IS HARD (Jack Ma Motivation)
Jack Ma or Ma Yun(Chinese: 马云; born September 10, 1964) is a Chinese
business magnate and philanthropist. He is the founder and executive
chairman of Alibaba Group, a family of successful Internet-based
businesses. He is the first mainland Chinese entrepreneur to appear on
the cover of Forbes. As of November 2014, he is the richest man in China
(Hong Kong not included) and 18th richest person in the world, with an
estimated net worth of $24.1 million, according to Forbes
Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. His parents were
traditional musician-storytellers. At an early age, Ma developed a
desire to learn English, so he rode his bicycle each morning to a nearby
hotel to converse with foreigners. He would guide them around the city
for free to practice and improve his English. He did this for nine
years. He became pen pals with one of these foreigners, and she
nicknamed him "Jack", because his real Chinese name was too difficult to
pronounce.
Later in his youth, and although he failed the university entrance exam
three times,Ma attended Hangzhou Teacher's Institute (currently known as
Hangzhou Normal University) and graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's
degree in English. While at school, Ma was elected student chairman. He
became a lecturer in English and International Trade at the Hangzhou
Dianzi University and later enrolled at Beijing-based Cheung Kong
Graduate School of Business (CKGSB), graduating in 2006

Jack Ma: 7 Tips and Pieces of Advice on Finding Your Opportunity and Being Happy
Jack Ma is one of the richest men in China and the whole world. Founder of Alibaba Group,
one of the most important e-commerce consortia in the world, this
multimillionaire didn’t have a wealthy father or a good education.
Nevertheless, his tenacity (among many other virtues) transformed him into what some call “the Bill Gates of Asia”. And to this, he responds: “Bill Gates and I have nothing in common. There is only one similarity. It’s that both of us are very attractive men”.
This is Jack Ma. We are going to know him in more detail, (also
including accusations which were the issue of some time ago); and we’re
going to share with you the 7 most inspirable tips and pieces of advice that we’ve gathered from Jack Ma so you learn how to find your opportunity and be happy.
Jack Ma’s History: His Origins, the Alibaba Empire and the Mass Pirating Scandal
He is 52 years old. He is the most powerful man in China and the
first millionaire from this country which made it onto the cover of
Forbes.
In almost all his known conferences and interviews, Jack Ma
insists on telling how he learned English on his own. He was 12 years
old and was working every day in a hotel in his city to offer guided
tours to tourists in exchange for conversing in English with them. Isn’t
that cool?
Maybe you’re thinking that Jack Ma always gets what he wants. This isn’t true.
He tried to enter three prestigious Universities in his birth city,
Hangzhou, but failed. What’s even worse, he applied to Harvard 10 time
and failed all 10 times. By force of frustration, he completed his
studies of being a professor in an Institute from his city which is
considered to be third or fourth in ranking.
After stumbling with jobs that didn’t mean much and in which he earned very little money, Jack Ma found his opportunity during a trip to the United States. It was the Internet.
It was 1994. The Internet was just taking its first steps. Jack Ma
knew nothing about computers. Nor did he know how to use a keyboard, but
he knew from that moment on that he had to do something with the Internet.
His idea formed immediately: a lot of people in China would like to
sell their products abroad, but they don’t have anywhere to do it. The
large traders were going to the best exhibitions of the world, but the
small companies didn’t have this option.
And what should they do? They complained! There, in these
complaints, Jack Ma discovered his grand opportunity and was encouraged
to create a work team to make an online sales platform for the small
traders. A lot of people were against this.
“They all were saying: this guy thinks different, crazy thoughts and things that could never work”.Jack Ma quote
In this atmosphere was born what then later turned into Alibaba Group. For three years, Jack Ma’s company didn’t earn a single dollar. The only goal was to survive.
1999: Jack Ma founded the websiteAlibaba.com, “a business to business portal for connecting Chinese manufactures with buyers abroad” (Wikipedia). Once again, there was a large lack of confidence. The most skeptical were saying that Jack Ma’s business model was appalling.
2001: Jack Ma searched for his first financing for a value between 3 and 5 million dollars. Nobody wanted to invest.
2005: Jerry Yang, the cofounder of Yahoo, invested 1,000 million dollars in Alibaba. From this point on the company didn’t stop growing.
September 19 2014: Alibaba launched on the Wall
Street stock market. The actions of the Chinese conglomerate sky
rocketed incredibly and placed Jack Ma among the ten richest men in
Asia.
At the closing of this historical day, Alibaba had a value of 231,440
million dollars, an amount superior to Facebook ($200 million USD) and
Amazon ($153 million USD).
From a startup founded in Jack Ma’s apartment with 18 employees and
60,000 dollars, Alibaba has been converted into the ecommerce giant with
more than 3000 workers. In 2015, Forbes calculated Jack Ma’s fortune to be 20,700 million dollars.
Image: elmundo.es
All outstanding up until now. If Jack Ma’s wealth didn’t slow down in accumulating, neither did his problems. In 2015, the Chinese government published an absurd number. “More than 60% of what is sold through the platform is pirating”.
This sentence is from a published note on Forbes Mx
about this hard battle against pirating (millions of false products and
even false stores) which the company still faces despite trying to
combat it.
But for Jack Ma stumbles aren’t falling. After everything “how many
times did he stumble in life and finished triumphing equal? No one more
displayed then him to advise you.
What Would Jack Ma Say to You if he Knew That You Were Dissatisfied With Your Life?
1.- Jack Ma Career Advice: If you don’t Find a Good Job, Create it Yourself.
“Complaining doesn’t help anything”, says Jack. And continuing: “all
the successful entrepreneurs (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Jack Welch,
Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg) are optimists with a future. They never
complain. They always try to resolve the problems of the rest”. Don’t
complain without any future expectation; always think in an optimistic
way
“A real failure is to stop fighting”.
2.- Jack Ma Advice: Look for Your Opportunity Where People Are Complaining.
It’s what he did himself. He saw the small traders complaining about
not being able to sell their products abroad and he used the Internet to
resolve this problem. It worked, right?
Photo: Forbes.com
3.- Jack Ma and His Team: Keep clear what you want to do and have a good work team that believes in the project as much as you.
For Jack Ma it’s fundamental to work with people who believe in the
Project. For this reason, it’s also key that you tell them exactly what
you want to do. Believe in your dreams and convince the team that it’s
possible to reach them.
“It doesn’t matter what the investors think,
it doesn’t matter what your parents think, it doesn’t matter what your
friends think, you believe it, your team has to believe it and work on
it day and night”. (Jack Ma quote)
4.- Jack Ma Advice for you Startup: an innovative spirit and a hard worker
Novelty in a business model is fundamental. For Jack Ma, capacity
isn’t everything. The decisions that are taken with an innovative sense
are the most important.
Again, try not to be negative and think: how could I make this
different? Or is there anything that can be done differently?. It’s
necessary to think about this well to then start doing it.
As for the hard work, even in 1999 when the Alibaba Empire was still just a Project, Jack Ma told his team: “If we have that kind of 8am-to-5pm spirit, then we should just go and do something else”.
“The ideas function for others and the work functions for its self.”
5.- Your business model has to be based on providing help to
someone else. It’s only when other people are successful and happy that
you will be able to consider yourself successful and happy.
The example is in sight. The small traders have always thanked Jack
Ma for giving them the opportunity to sell their products abroad.
Currently, the Alibaba Group’s sites (taobao, alipay, tmall y Alibaba)
have more than 100 million buyers a day. These sales benefit an
approximate 50 million small companies.

6.- Don’t think about the opportunities that are already spent.
For Jack Ma an opportunity always exists. You only need to know how to discover it.
Regardless, for this Internet Empire the Network has a lot more
potential to utilize. “The Internet is a bubble that keeps getting
bigger and bigger. But when will it burst?”
The internet is a bubble that keeps getting bigger and bigger. But when will it burst?
In one of the many conferences which offered to thousands of people interested in hearing about his peaks, Jack Ma released an interesting explanation of the evolution of the Internet. He said that the past 20 years are known as IT, Technology Information. IT makes a company grows and becomes stronger.
Currently, we are entering a new era. In words of the speaker:
“We are leaving the era: I have the
information and you don’t. And stepping into the era: you have the
information and I don’t, I don’t need the information. The new era is
sharing, it’s responsibility, it’s passion for the future. Now all of us
are equal because we all start on the same starting line”.
Jack Ma advise taking the max from this new Internet era. Here, thousands of opportunities for exploring can be found.
7.- Jack Ma Tip: If you decide to start your own business, you need to know that you are giving up a steady income.
There are always margins of risk. It’s most likely that for a period
of time you won’t gain money from your business. But it you truly
believe in what you do then, you don’t have to worry.
“Today is complicated and you suffer, tomorrow is going to be worse, but after tomorrow everything is going to be great.”
Here they are the best tips from Jack Ma. Perhaps we missed one that
says never forget to candy as a gift to your clients. Anyway, just a
little humor. As a matter of fact, for this monster of business, the clients are always first. Second, the employees. Third, the shareholders.
We are done and hope that this post is a good boost for you. As you
have seen, Jack Ma is an overwhelming personality. The Forbes magazine
catalogued him on one of their covers as “unstoppable” and it’s true.
Above all, his optimism is astonishing. Do you know that he said in one of his previous conferences? That small companies will be the true leaders of global economy. He really is optimistic! What do you think?
7 pieces of advice for a successful career (and life) from Jack Ma
Don't
know what you want to do in life? Jack Ma did not know his calling
either. He did not anticipate becoming either a teacher or an
entrepreneur.
He said that you should always aim to be the first
- the first to solve challenges because with challenges lie unforeseen
opportunities. Another takeaway was to remain happy and healthy.
Chris Anderson: Elon, hey, welcome back to TED. It’s great to have you here.
Elon Musk: Thanks for having me.
Chris Anderson:
So, in the next half hour or so, we’re going to spend some time
exploring your vision for what an exciting future might look like, which
I guess makes the first question a little ironic: Why are you boring?
Elon Musk: Yeah
I ask myself that frequently. We’re trying to dig a hole under LA, and
this is to create the beginning of what will hopefully be a 3D network
of tunnels to alleviate congestion. So right now, one of the most
soul-destroying things is traffic. It affects people in every part of
the world. It takes away so much of your life. It’s horrible. It’s
particularly horrible in LA.
Chris Anderson: I think you’ve brought with you the first visualization that’s been shown of this. Can I show this?
Elon Musk:
Yeah, absolutely So this is the first time — Just to show what we’re
talking about. So a couple of key things that are important in having a
3D tunnel network. First of all, you have to be able to integrate the
entrance and exit of the tunnel seamlessly into the fabric of the city.
So by having an elevator, sort of a car skate, that’s on an elevator,
you can integrate the entrance and exits to the tunnel network just by
using two parking spaces. And then the car gets on a skate. There’s no
speed limit here, so we’re designing this to be able to operate at 200
kilometers an hour.
Chris Anderson: How much?
Elon Musk:
200 kilometers an hour, or about 130 miles per hour. So you should be
able to get from, say, Westwood to LAX in six minutes — five, six
minutes.
Chris Anderson: So possibly, initially done, it’s like on a sort of toll road-type basis.
Elon Musk: Yeah.
Chris Anderson: Which, I guess, alleviates some traffic from the surface streets as well.
Elon Musk: So, I don’t know if people noticed it in
the video, but there’s no real limit to how many levels of tunnel you
can have. You can go much further deep than you can go up. The deepest
mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall, so you can
alleviate any arbitrary level of urban congestion with a 3D tunnel
network. This is a very important point.
So a key rebuttal to the
tunnels is that if you add one layer of tunnels, then that will simply
alleviate congestion, it will get used up, and then you’ll be back where
you started, back with congestion. But you can go to any arbitrary
number of tunnels, any number of levels.
Chris Anderson: But people — seen traditionally, it’s incredibly expensive to dig, and that would block this idea.
Elon Musk: Yeah. Well,
they’re right. To give you an example, the LA subway extension, which
is — I think it’s a two-and-a-half mile extension that was just
completed for two billion dollars. So it’s roughly a billion dollars a
mile to do the subway extension in LA. And this is not the highest
utility subway in the world. So yeah, it’s quite difficult to dig
tunnels normally. I think we need to have at least a tenfold improvement
in the cost per mile of tunneling.
Chris Anderson: And how could you achieve that?
Elon Musk: Actually,
if you just do two things, you can get to approximately an order of
magnitude improvement, and I think you can go beyond that. So the first
thing to do is to cut the tunnel diameter by a factor of two or more. So
a single road lane tunnel according to regulations has to be 26 feet,
maybe 28 feet in diameter to allow for crashes and emergency vehicles
and sufficient ventilation for combustion engine cars. But if you shrink
that diameter to what we’re attempting, which is 12 feet, which is
plenty to get an electric skate through, you drop the diameter by a
factor of two and the cross-sectional area by a factor of four, and the
tunneling cost scales with the cross-sectional area. So that’s roughly a
half-order of magnitude improvement right there.
Then tunneling
machines currently tunnel for half the time, then they stop, and then
the rest of the time is putting in reinforcements for the tunnel wall.
So if you design the machine instead to do continuous tunneling and
reinforcing, that will give you a factor of two improvement. Combine
that and that’s a factor of eight. Also these machines are far from
being at their power or thermal limits, so you can jack up the power to
the machine substantially. I think you can get at least a factor of two,
maybe a factor of four or five improvement on top of that.
So I
think there’s a fairly straightforward series of steps to get somewhere
in excess of an order of magnitude improvement in the cost per mile, and
our target actually is — we’ve got a pet snail called Gary, this is
from Gary the snail from “South Park,” I mean, sorry, “SpongeBob
SquarePants”. So Gary is capable of — currently he’s capable of going 14
times faster than a tunnel-boring machine.
Why you should listen?
Elon Musk is the CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and the CEO/CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX).
At SpaceX, Musk oversees the development of rockets and spacecraft
for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to other planets. In 2008,
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Dragonspacecraft won the
NASA contract to provide cargo transport to space. In 2012, SpaceX
became the first commercial company to dock with the International Space
Station and return cargo to Earth with the Dragon.
At Tesla, Musk has overseen product development and design from the
beginning, including the all-electric Tesla Roadster, Model S and Model
X, and the rollout of Supercharger stations to keep the cars juiced up.
(Some of the charging stations use solar energy systems from SolarCity,
of which Musk is the non-executive chair.) Transitioning to a
sustainable energy economy, in which electric vehicles play a pivotal
role, has been one of his central interests for almost two decades. He
co-founded PayPal and served as the company’s chair and CEO.
“So, what’s it going to be?”
My advisor looked at me expectantly, as if I was simply at a McDonald’s
needing to make the simple choice between a BigMac or a Quarter Pounder.
“Let’s
run through the options,” she continued. “Government is a solid choice
if you’re thinking about law school. English would be a smart decision
if you’re interested in publishing or teaching. Communications is useful
in most fields…”
“Women’s studies?” I ventured, hoping she would run off a list of career
doors that would open to me if I chose this particular field of study.
Instead, she cocked her head to the side, chewed her pen cap and looked at me as if I was a unicorn.
Next, her eyes lit up: “You can always find a job as a nanny!”
That meeting took my stress levels to unprecedented heights. In
hindsight, I realize that she had all of the best intentions with her
“let’s choose a major that increases your employability” approach. It
seemed reasonable enough at the time, but after helping thousands of
job-seekers land multiple offers through my online coaching program,
I’ve come to realize that your declared major has nothing to do with
your success.
Unfortunately, that realization hasn’t caught on in the mainstream yet.
According to a recent study, 82% of 2015 graduates researched their
field of choice before determining what major to pursue in college. When
you look at this statistic through the lens of student loans and the
2008 recession, it comes as no surprise that students want to pursue
careers that will enable them to pay off their hefty debt.
If your
degree alone guaranteed a job, this kind of strategic long-term
planning would make sense. And yes, there are certain jobs that require
the skills affiliated with specified degrees, such as engineering,
architecture, and computer science. But by and large, your college major
is unlikely to have any bearing on your career success. I’ve coached
math majors who later chose to pursue careers in comedy, and I’ve seen
plenty of Elle Woodses come through my door, so I know firsthand that a
fashion merchandising degree doesn’t affect your ability to get accepted
to law school.
Plus, look at me: I’m a political science graduate and counterterrorism professional turned career coach.
Here are a few points to consider about why our attachment to the idea that majors matter should be put to rest.
1. Your degree is a prerequisite for the competitive workforce; the
topic is irrelevant. It used to be important and special for someone to
have a degree, and now it just stands as a prerequisite in the
workforce. While your job will most likely require a Bachelor’s degree,
it probably won’t matter what field it is in. According to recent
research, 62% of recent college graduates are working in jobs that
require a degree, yet only 27% of college graduates are working in a job
that even relates to their major.
2. Certain fields yield higher incomes, but your major does not need to
align with the industry. The individuals who dedicate their undergrad
years to their field of choice (business, medicine, law) don’t
necessarily end up achieving greater success in the field than those who
arrived there with a completely unrelated major. For example, history
majors who pursued careers in business ended up earning as much as
business majors, according to one study. You don’t have to study English
to be a writer, you don’t have to study business to be a consultant,
and you don’t have to study political science to go into government. The
real world doesn’t care about your degree as much as your work ethic
and attitude.
3. Your experience, be it on the job or off the job,
is what people notice. Take advantage of the opportunities you have as
an undergraduate to pursue interesting internships, get involved in
student organizations, and volunteer for causes you are passionate
about. These lines on your resume are so much more powerful than your
major because they tell employers that you are motivated, passionate,
and involved. Best of all, they allow you to “create” your experience
that employers request of you.
4. Think soft skills, not major topics. Employers want to know that you
will be able to learn quickly, fit into the workplace environment, and
be responsive to the task at hand. For these reasons, 93% of employers
believe that critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving
skills are more important than a job candidate’s undergraduate field of
study. Furthermore, 95% of employers are looking for candidates whose
skills translate into out-of-the-box thinking and innovation, as many of
the jobs being filled today come with challenges that are more complex
than in the past.Perhaps this explains why Silicon Valley is starting to
favor employees who studied liberal arts, versus those who took the
more “typical” tech path as software engineers. Soft skills are the
skills of the future.
5. You’re a better performer when you’re aligned with your purpose. As a
career coach, I hear from countless clients who feel energetically
zapped by their jobs. When I help them get more clear on their purpose,
it’s as though a new, powerful energy takes them over… Why? Because
purpose gives you unprecedented energy. If you major in a field you’re
truly interested in, you will give it the effort, attention and
enthusiasm that translates into success. Stellar performance – in any
field – is what translates into career success. Studies show that a
happy brain is engaged, motivated, and productive. In other words, our
happiness drives our success, so think twice before committing to that
math major: Many roads lead to business school, so you might as well
take the one that will make you the happiest.
6. Your network matters way more than your college major. You can choose
a major that correlates with a high-paying job in the real world…you
can hunker down and score A’s in your classes and graduate with a
perfect GPA…but without a solid network of contacts, you’re missing a
huge piece of the puzzle. If no one knows whoyou are, no one will care
how smart you are. This is why it is so important that people who truly
want to be successful put just as much effort, if not more, into
networking as they do into their studies. You can start doing this right
now, simply by building relationships with your professors,
participating in internships and volunteer activities, and even by
reaching out to strangers who fascinate you. I’ve seen it with my own
clients, many of whom have received multiple job offers: authentic
flattery goes a long way.
Your major is not going to pave a yellow
brick road for career success. Scoring straight A’s in your prelaw
coursework is not always the golden ticket to a million-dollar payday…If
you don’t believe me, ask a lawyer.
Whatever you choose to study, make your own personal development the
true goal of your undergraduate career. Use your undergraduate years to
learn about yourself—your unique brilliance and your passions— not to
learn everything there is to know about the branches and functions of
foreign governments that don’t interest you in the belief that doing so
will land you a job in politics.
We’ve all worked with the genius intern with the perfect resume who
couldn’t make it to the office on time (ever); the one who spoke six
languages but teamwork wasn’t one of them. Likewise, we’ve all known the
colleague from the never-heard-of-it college who hustled harder than
anyone else on the team and flew up the ladder with blink and you’ll
miss her speed.
As Arthur Clarke said, “It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.”
What has been proven is that the most successful leaders are motivated by a purpose.
